Trash to treasure: Miss Penny got her wings

For those of you who may not know the story, this is Miss Penny.  She came into our lives one day when we were doing an adoption event at the Petco Copperfield location in Houston, TX.  Someone had left her tied to a garbage bin in the back of the store in the rain.  This purebred senior Labrador found herself literally thrown out in the trash. The folks at Petco were genuinely horrified at such cruelty and reached out to some of the folks who volunteered at the adoption events.

Theresa Eatherly has a thing for the seniors, human and animal, so Miss Penny found a soft spot to land.  She got a vet exam, put into boarding, and spoiled by a bunch of volunteers, we all loved her.  Reality is that animals like Miss Penny usually have a snowflake's chance in Hades of getting adopted, but every single weekend for months, Theresa brought Miss Penny out to adoptions.  Miss Penny loved the attention, she got  extra treats, especially from Mr. Tim H., she also had tag wags and a good try at a bark for him when she needed to go, ahem, for a walk.  Some folks, thought Theresa was just plain crazy trying to get Miss Penny adopted, but whatever anyone thought, Miss Penny was well-loved and so is Theresa.

A few months ago, a volunteer placed advertisements and stories about Miss Penny and a lady by the name of Miss Judy inquired about her.  We were all pretty surprised, but Miss Judy contacted Theresa and set up a meeting to come and visit Miss Penny.  Words just cannot describe it, so we'll just leave it with this photo,

Miss Penny finally got her home and, for some of us that had been running short on faith or whose hearts had gone a little cold on humanity, we got a flame lit again.

Our senior girl with the happy smile and hoarse bark, was given an opportunity to have a new life, to live, to get love, and give love.  It has been several months since this day and we heard from Miss Judy earlier this afternoon.

"All,

Penny passed away this morning.  She was a great dog.  I was so fortunate to have her in my life.  Our time together was too short.

Judy Conley."

Miss Penny and Miss Judy took all of us full circle and Miss Penny taught us that when you .."...see a Penny, pick it up, and all the day you'll have good luck."

Thank you for the friendship Miss Penny, we love you.
